Job Description

The Senior Safety and Maintenance Engineer is part of a cross functional team of engineers at the Wilson, NC site and is responsible for supporting safety and maintenance related department activities and initiatives. The Senior Safety and Maintenance Engineer will manage the site safety contractor management program, evaluate and revise site safety programs, complete permits for high-risk work permits, and assist in the coordination/management of facility/utility related projects. Collaborates with others to support equipment reliability and maintenance initiatives including determining root cause analysis of failures as requested. Incumbent will also manage small capital and expense projects supporting utility, facility, and packaging operations.

Primary Activities

Technical

  • Leads the development and implementation of site-wide high-risk work safety programs such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fire protection, and other OSHA safety compliance programs.

  • Leads the Maintenance and Utilities department regarding safety protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of staff as well as regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

  • Performs a periodic review of site safety programs and recommends revisions as necessary.

  • Manages the site safety contractor management program to ensure compliance with all site programs.

  • Manages small capital projects (i.e. justifications, facility impact documentation, project scope documentation, etc.).

  • Collaborate with others to identify and prioritize department tasks, assist with troubleshooting equipment issues, managing safety and reliability projects, and communicating status of mitigating actions.

  • Conducts routine and follow-up environmental health, safety and hazard inspections of site facilities.

  • Perform safety inspections to ensure site and department compliance with OSHA and NFPA safety standards.

  • Provides technical expertise and consultation on hazard recognition and control, risk management and behavioral modification.

  • Comply with Federal, State and local safety standards on site safety procedures and permitting systems.

  • Assist with the general upkeep and maintenance of buildings to ensure that they meet health and safety standards.

  • Provides guidance to engineering support teams (Automation/Reliability/Maintenance/Cleaning Validation )for site high risk work and contractor management requirements. Responsibilities include communicating technical information to non-technical personnel.

  • Compiles and reviews data to develop equipment and/or utility specific action plans and reports for critical assets.

  • Develops, implements, updates, and enforces safety programs and protocols.

  • Develops and promotes corrective actions associated with safety related events/investigations

  • Participate in safety and regulatory audits (i.e. tours, topic discussion)

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

  • Performs miscellaneous jobs as the position requires.

Leadership

  • Serves on Incident Response Team and provides mentorship to site in all aspects of safety

  • Proactive leadership of site high risk work program

  • Leads contractor management program for site and collaborates with partner groups coordinating contractor work to ensure strict adherence to program

  • Strong communication to advocate for continuous safety awareness

  • Serves on shutdown planning team to coordinate work with safety as top priority

Education and Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, preferred in Engineering or Technology disciplines.

Required Experience and Skills

  • A minimum of six (6) years experience directly related to the application of safety duties.

  • A minimum of three (3) years of maintenance and project management experience.

  • A minimum of three years working within a cGDP environment for pharmaceutical and/or vaccine manufacturing.

  • Experience managing small capital projects (i.e. justifications, facility impact documentation, project scope documentation, etc.)

  • Familiar with federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures, including OSHA and NFPA safety standards.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to investigate and analyze information and make recommendations for improvement.

  • Strong planning, scheduling, and time management skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong communication, team, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Formal problem-solving skills, such as root cause analysis (RCA), failure mode effects analysis (FMEA), and/or Lean Six Sigma tools

  • Demonstrated experience of interacting with safety and/or regulatory audits

  • Deviation management, troubleshooting and resolving utility and equipment issues

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

The salary range for this role is

$114,700.00 - $180,500.00

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, government requirements, and business or organizational needs.

The successful candidate will be eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentive, if applicable.
