As a Scientist II you will be responsible for leading and supporting research and development of clinical products within the Labcorp Oncology R&D team. You will collaborate with team members from clinical operations, bioinformatics, process automation, project management and other stakeholders to develop, validate and support new tests and capabilities within the oncology assay portfolio.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Technical lead for developing, optimizing, validating, and performing advanced diagnostic laboratory tests using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms and other molecular based methodologies. This will include requirements to plan, execute, analyze, and deliver results from various research and development projects. (50%).
  • Co-ordinate with clinical operations and automation engineers to support ongoing assays as well as develop, validate and implement assay updates (20%).
  • Maintain strong cross-functional support and relationships with other teams including but not limited to, with clinical operations, bioinformatics, automations, and Research and Development (10%).
  • Effectively present and communicate the outcomes of experiments and validations as well as troubleshooting studies to the broader team and support peer-review publications (10%).
  • Devise and execute training, where appropriate, to develop and elevate the technical skills within the team (5%).
  • May supervise or participate in the technical training of new staff and students in the laboratory (5%).

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (i.e. Molecular Genetics, Biology, Biotechnology, Medical Technology) and the equivalent of eight (8) years of professional full-time clinical or research laboratory experience in industry.
  • Established expertise in the operation of NGS and laboratory automation instrumentation and techniques.
  • Proficient in analytical thinking, scientific & technical writing, planning, troubleshooting, time management and delegation.
  • Good communication skills to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to understand project objectives, gather workflow requirements, design tests, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions.
  • Familiarization with Automation and Laboratory Information Systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biological Sciences (i.e. Molecular Genetics, Biology, Biotechnology, Medical Technology) and the equivalent of eight (5) years of full-time professional clinical or research laboratory experience in industry.
  • PhD degree in Biological Sciences (i.e. Molecular Genetics, Biology, Biotechnology, Medical Technology) and the equivalent three (3) year of full-time professional clinical or research laboratory experience in industry.
  • Extensive molecular biology expertise with strong experimental proficiency in NGS and downstream data analysis using R, Python, Perl, or other preferred programming languages.
