Histology Associate

Essential Responsibilities
- Routine staining- use and programming of autostainer; reagent preparation; use of coverslipper and manual coverslipping
- Immunohistochemical staining - 1º and 2º antibody determination; antigen retrieval techniques; reagent prep, including single, serial, and concentration dilutions; develop new antibodies
- Special staining – identify appropriate control; follow and/or modify specified procedure(s); reagent preparation, including single, serial, and concentration dilutions; interpret staining quality; troubleshooting; and develop new staining procedures
- Microtomy – produce quality sections free of aesthetic defects; frozen sectioning
- Review and QC slides
Additional Responsibilities
- Trimming - tissue identification; trimming per SOP and NIEHS guidelines
- Necropsy - tissue identification; dissection according to SOP w/o trauma; gross descriptions per provided guidelines; timed necropsies
- Embedding - per SOP; use and programming of tissue processors; development of processing schedules
- Work in a team environment with a professional and positive attitude
- Other duties as needed

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Education:
- H.S. diploma or equivalent
- B.S. degree in Biology or related field
Experience:
- ≥ 20 years in Histology
- ≥ 16 years in Histology
Skills:
- Experience with animal tissue
- Proficient with Immunohistochemical stains
- Proficiency with histological techniques: microscopy, special stains, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and microscopy
Certification:
- ASCP Registered Histology Technician required

Working Environment
- Primarily laboratory/animal facility (respirator, safety glasses, lab coat, shoe covers, head cover, and gloves, as needed)
- Occasional office work
- Occasional weekend, holiday, and evening work required
*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person’s relevant experience and/or education level.
