Summary of the position:
The Formulation Technician is responsible for the accurate preparation, mixing, and processing of pharmaceutical or chemical formulations in accordance with batch records, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This role supports production goals by ensuring timely and compliant execution of formulation activities, maintaining documentation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and improve processes.
This is a second shift position 2:30pm-10:30pm, M-F, with the possibility of overtime.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Weighs, measures, and mixes raw materials according to batch records and formulation instructions.
- Ensures all materials are verified and reconciled before and after use.
- Operates formulation equipment including tanks, mixers, homogenizers, pumps, and filtration systems.
- Adapt formulations processes to production environment.
- Prepare/review process documentation.
- Formulate existing products.
- Performs in-process checks such as pH, density/specific gravity, temperature, and weight verification.
- Identify and reports deviations, non-conformances, and equipment malfunctions.
- Train operations personnel on new/existing processes.
- Identify and implement improvements for existing processes.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies.
- Sanitizing hold tanks, formulation tanks, process equipment, utensils and general cleaning of formulation processing areas.
- Working within a cleanroom environment utilizing proper aseptic techniques and pharmaceutical hygiene practices.
- Complying with area gowning requirements and PPE safety procedures.
- Complying with all areas Standard Operating Procedures.
- Completes batch records, logbooks, and other documentation accurately and in real time.
- Reviews and verifies documentation for completeness and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Participates in internal audits and supports external inspections as needed
Department Specific/Non-Essential Functions:
- Works closely with Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Filling, Packaging, and other departments to ensure smooth operations.
- Participates in continuous improvement initiatives and departmental projects.
- Adheres to all safety guidelines, including PPE usage, chemical handling, and emergency procedures.
- Comply with GMP, FDA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations.
- Notify management of unsafe conditions or practices, unlawful activities and activities which present unreasonable health and/or environmental risk. Report all safety and/or environmental incidents to management immediately.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.
Education, Experience, and/or Skill:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical certification preferred.
- Strong mathematical skills, being able to read EU units of measurements i.e. liters (L) and or kilograms (Kg).
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or chemical manufacturing environment. (Preferred)
- Compounding or formulation with laboratory experience. (Preferred)
- Strong understanding of GMP, SOPs, and batch documentation.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot formulation equipment.
- Excellent attention to details, organizational and critical thinking skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Work with hazardous materials in a controlled environment.
- Lifting of 50 pounds (23kg) or more for short periods of time.
- Be able to stand for a long period of time.
- Be able to bend while scooping chemicals to be weighted.
Cognitive Requirements:
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must have good interpersonal skills and Mechanical aptitude required.
- Willingness to work overtime / off-shift.
- Ability to interact with R&D chemists.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in an environment-controlled production facility.
- Heavily regulated and documented area with attention to detail.
- Operating material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, electric lifts and drums dumping equipment.
Organizational Relationship/Scope:
- This position reports to the Formulation Supervisor
- This position will work closely with Q&R team, M&D team, and all production coordinators.
