Position Purpose
The Material Handler - Empty and Full Bags is responsible for the unloading, storing, and distribution of both empty bags (used for packaging pet food) and bags filled with finished product. This role ensures that production lines have an uninterrupted supply of both empty bags and finished product bags, contributing to a smooth production flow. The position also maintains a safe, clean, and organized environment while managing inventory of bags and ensuring timely material handling.
Requirements
- 2nd Shift hours are Monday through Friday 2PM to 10 PM. There may be times where overtime and weekend work may be required.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in material handling, warehouse operations, or logistics is preferred but not required.
- 2 or more years forklift experience (Required)
Skills and Competencies:
- Knowledge of material handling techniques, including safe lifting and equipment operation.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently.
- Basic math and computer skills for inventory tracking and data entry.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Certifications (Preferred):
- Forklift Operator Certification.
- HACCP or GMP training.
Work Environment:
- This position requires working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, temperature variations, and industrial equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly, as well as carry, push, or pull heavy loads.
- Must be able to operate material handling equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, as necessary to support production schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Unloading and Storing Bags:
- Unload deliveries of empty bags and filled product bags from trucks and containers, ensuring that bags are handled safely and efficiently.
- Inspect incoming bags for quality and quantity, verifying against shipping documentation.
- Store empty bags in designated areas and ensure they are organized for easy access
- Transport and store full bags of finished product in proper storage areas, ensuring they are ready for packaging or shipment.
- Distribution of Bags:
- Distribute empty bags to production lines, ensuring an adequate and steady supply for packaging.
- Move full bags of finished product to the packaging area or storage as needed, ensuring that the product is available for shipping or further processing.
- Work closely with the production and packaging teams to meet bagging and packaging needs based on daily production schedules.
- Inventory Management:
- Track and monitor inventory of both empty and filled bags, ensuring accurate and timely stock levels.
- Update inventory systems to document bag quantities and usage, and report any discrepancies to management.
- Assist with periodic stock counts to ensure proper inventory levels and reconciliation of materials.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe material handling practices.
- Ensure that all bag handling and storage processes comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and company safety standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment to minimize risks and maintain operational efficiency.
- General Support and Maintenance:
- Assist with maintaining clean and orderly storage areas for both empty and full bags.
- Report any damaged or defective bags, equipment issues, or hazards to supervisors.
- Support other material handling tasks as needed, including general warehouse maintenance.
- Collaboration with Other Departments:
- Communicate regularly with production and packaging teams to ensure bags are supplied as needed to maintain production flow.
- Coordinate with the Warehouse Supervisor to address material shortages or excesses.
- Assist with resolving any material or production bottlenecks related to bag supplies.
