Position Summary
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides direct clinical and administrative support to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The CMA ensures efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, and high-quality patient care while maintaining compliance with clinical, regulatory, and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Prepare patients for examinations, procedures, and clinical trial visits.
- Record and update vital signs, medical histories, and medications.
- Perform basic clinical procedures: phlebotomy, injections, EKGs, specimen collection, point-of-care testing.
- Assist providers with examinations, minor procedures, and treatments.
- Administer medications and immunizations under provider supervision.
- Ensure proper handling, labeling, and processing of laboratory specimens.
- Support investigational product accountability (if in research setting).
Administrative Duties
- Schedule patient appointments and manage visit reminders.
- Maintain accurate and timely entry into electronic health records (EHR) or clinical trial management systems (CTMS).
- Process referrals, prior authorizations, and insurance documentation.
- Assist with regulatory and compliance documentation (HIPAA, OSHA, ICH-GCP for research).
- Manage inventory of medical and office supplies.
Patient Engagement
- Provide patient education on procedures, medications, and trial participation.
- Address patient inquiries and escalate clinical concerns to providers.
- Support patient recruitment and retention efforts in clinical trials.
- Ensure culturally sensitive and patient-centered communication.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA, AMT, NHA, or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).
- Phlebotomy skills (preferred in many settings).
- Prior experience in a clinical, outpatient, or research setting preferred.
