What you will do in this role
The Import Specialist will be responsible for facilitating the import process to ensure compliant, timely, and accurate inventory movements while maintaining proper documentation and transaction detail. This role is also responsible for ensuring accurate inventory of imported goods throughout our warehouse and in-transit locations via the monthly warehouse inventory reconciliation and participating in annual physical inventories if needed. This role will report to the Director, Logistics & Trade Compliance.
Responsibilities
- Facilitates the import process to ensure compliant, timely, and accurate inventory movements, which includes shipment coordination, import/export documents, customs clearance, goods movements from in-transit location to storage warehouse or formulator, duty rate application, and internal communication
- Review documents (e.g., confirm pricing, incoterms, and payment terms are correct) necessary for the effective transport of international shipment in compliance with appropriate regulations
- Coordinate with drayage companies to secure equipment for port pick-up
- Closely monitor container movements after customs release to verify delivery to final destination
- Review and confirm bookings with custom broker and freight forwarders to assure imported goods are US Customs cleared and delivered to destination in a timely manner
- Responsible for providing, updating, and maintaining reports needed for tracking of all inbound shipments, provide clear and accurate information and communicate to supply chain and customer excellence teams
- Maintains required record keeping for all imports/exports, compliant with both EPA and US Customs regulations
- Ensure ERP system is updated with current information (e.g., ship dates, goods receipts, and transfer from in-transit to warehouse) that all data that needs to be entered into System is entered so that it is always complete and accurate
- Control shipping costs by ensuring the highest standard of service at the most cost-effective price to the company, and avoiding additional costs (e.g., demurrage, detention, storage) at the time of import
- Aides in resolving nonconformance logistic & transportation issues (delivery delays, customer concerns, packaging related issues, etc.), and communicates with the supply chain team as appropriate
Required Skills/Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in business, supply chain management, or a related field
- Two plus years of logistics, courier or freight forwarding experience
- Two plus years of Import / Export / Customs experience (Experience with Mexico/Maquila preferred)
- Experience with different modes of transportation, air, ocean, rail, truck.
- Knowledge of Department of Transportation hazardous materials regulations
- Excellent interpersonal skills and proactive communication skills
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
- High level of attention to detail
- Demonstrates leadership skills in driving change and improving the integrity of applicable processes and systems
- Ability to work effectively across diverse and cross-functional teams, under critical timelines and while balancing the needs of internal and external customers
- Intermediate level Microsoft Office skills
